Japanese Top View Oranda

Image
Such a majestic creature, with its dragon head style headgrowth and elongated body gliding through the water. Its shimmering golden scales add up to its aesthetics value. What is this creature? Well, its a goldfish that's for sure. What kind of goldfish?  It is the   日本オランダ獅子頭 (Nihon Oranda Shishigashira/Japan Lionhead Oranda) or the Japanese Top View Oranda. When a person sees this fish for the first time, many would mention that it looks like the Japanese Ranchu or Top View Ranchu. Some of the Thai breeders call them "Nagate Oranda". About 300 years ago, between 1673 and 1854 Japan had created a restriction to the country. (No foreigner could enter nor could any Japanese leave Japan on penalty of death) But the only Westerners allowed access to Japan were the Netherlands' Dutch East India Company. This is where the goods being brought in are referred to as Dutch goods. In the process, a number of terms emerged. When it was first import...

How To Keep Your Goldfish Healthy And Growing

Image
Credit to photographer : Darren Chia Attention : These are methods that I used for my goldfish and it turns out well. All parameters can be changed accordingly. For the feeding regime, I am using a regime that will maintain the vigor, stout form of goldfish and not just for "fun" keeping.   There has been a rumour going around about goldfish ever since I could remember. The rumour is that goldfish is not easily taken care of and  they easily get sick too. While this might be true (as compared to other pet fish), there are ways to prevent it.  If you have a system or a flow for your hobby, your fish will rarely get sick (unless due to inevitable circumstances such as no water change due to travelling etc. etc.). Below are what you can do to keep your existing fish and new fish healthy and growing: 1. Quarantine New Goldfish Quarantine : To separate your fish from the main tank/tub in another tank/tub to be treated with an...

How To Condition Water for Goldfish

Image
How To Condition the Water For Goldfish (Basic) Disclaimer : The methods displayed are just based on my personal experience (for malaysia's tap water). These steps have been used after a few "try and error" episodes and it works for my goldfish. I do not claim that this is the best method. I also do not claim to be the inventor of these methods. I learn a lot from the internet, experience and advice from fellow goldfish keepers. These methods comprises of only basic steps. You can add salt to the water (commonly practiced). But I only add salt during the first week of arrival (new fish) for quarantine purposes. This is not for New Tanks, new tanks have to undergo the cycling process. This is for tanks/tubs that have been used for a while. I suggest that every fish keeper to have a water reservoir. So that if any water change is needed, conditioned water is available for use. Reservoir (Water supply) : Reservoir here means a volume of water be...

The Beginning Of It All

Image
A Comet Goldfish         It all started when I was 7 years old, my father bought a big 200-L fiber-glass tub (its kind of like a pond).  Initially, he bought it for his nishikigoi (koi) but after a tragedy, he eventually end up not using the pond.      What was the tragedy? We went back to my father's hometown for a few days and when we came back, all the kois were found dead...floating on the surface...and a strong smell filled the air of our front lawn.  The cause of the tragedy is a power shortage that made the pump to stop working. The pond was dried up and was not used for a few months.     Naturally, seeing a blue, not-so-new, empty pond doesn't make my conscience feel at ease. I filled it up with water and  bought a new pump (with my mom). Now that the pond is all up and running, with crystal clear water flowing...I feel that its time to stock it up!     My father was also drawn back to fish...

The Trigger of My Japanese Goldfish Obsession : The Odd Fish on Hikari Gold Packet

Image
The old packaging of Hikari Gold     I was 11 years old, with a booming passion for goldfish (I started keeping goldfish at 7 years old) and was at the time familiarising myself with the Hikari brand of fish foods. Being an 11 year old, I didn't have much money to buy expensive foods and the Hikari Gold was one of the fish foods that I can afford (after saving for a week). At first, I didn't pay much attention to the fish being displayed on the packaging and was more interested in reading about the qualities of the food itself (colour enchancers, easily digested, etc etc). After a while, I became interested in the fishes being displayed on each packaging and tried to guess which variety the fish belongs to. But I could not guess the odd fish on this particular pink packaging, and initially thought it could be a butterfly ryukin with a fused tail. I began searching on the internet (at the time smartphone wasn't a thing yet) and stumbled upon an article (a very va...
