Japanese Top View Oranda

Such a majestic creature, with its dragon head style headgrowth and elongated body gliding through the water. Its shimmering golden scales add up to its aesthetics value.

What is this creature? Well, its a goldfish that's for sure. What kind of goldfish?
It is the  日本オランダ獅子頭 (Nihon Oranda Shishigashira/Japan Lionhead Oranda) or the Japanese Top View Oranda.
When a person sees this fish for the first time, many would mention that it looks like the Japanese Ranchu or Top View Ranchu. Some of the Thai breeders call them "Nagate Oranda".

About 300 years ago, between 1673 and 1854 Japan had created a restriction to the country.
(No foreigner could enter nor could any Japanese leave Japan on penalty of death)
But the only Westerners allowed access to Japan were the Netherlands' Dutch East India Company.
This is where the goods being brought in are referred to as Dutch goods. In the process, a number of terms emerged. When it was first imported from China to Japan, it was mistakenly thought to be native to the Netherlands as it was imported by the Netherlands' Dutch East India Company, and was therefore dubbed the "Holland Lionmask" (オランダ獅子頭/Oranda Shishigashira). It was pronounced as Hollanda from which its English name "oranda" derives.

The "Oranda Shishigashira" that came from China over 180 years ago has been developed to be a unique breed and was carefully bred in Japan mainly in West Japan and Shikoku.

However, the Japanese Oranda is not the same as the common Oranda that is widely known around the world.  It possesses a long body, a large well-spread  tail and a rectangular/box-shaped head.
There is also an association dedicated to the Japanese Oranda in Shikoku.

One of the links to one of the association : http://www.geocities.jp/kn30328/kai1.htm

There are also references saying that there are sub-varieties of the Japanese Oranda. A source mentioned that the Orandas from one part of Japan has elongated body while orandas from another area has much more compact body. There's also a region who developed the Jumbo/Giant Japanese Orandas. We'll dig into that later.
